Three-Vehicle Smash Closes M20 Near Swanley
Emergency crews scrambled to a serious three-vehicle crash on the M20 close to Junction 3, Swanley, early this morning (October 16, 2024). The collision, which happened just before 7am, has sparked chaos with major traffic jams in the area.
Fire Engines and Police Rush to Scene
Kent Fire and Rescue Service deployed three fire engines, working alongside Kent Police, National Highways officers, and South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb). Traffic has been halted in both directions as emergency teams respond. The coast-bound entry slip road from the clockwise M25 remains completely blocked.
Drivers heading towards London are in for a nightmare, with queues stretching back to Junction 2 near Dartford. Vehicles are being diverted via London-bound slip roads to dodge the crash site, causing further delays.
Official Warnings and Diversion Advice
A National Highways spokesperson confirmed:
The M20 east/coastbound between Junction 1 (M25) and Junction 3 (M26) is closed due to a collision.
Westbound towards London is also shut within Junction 1. Traffic is being diverted off at the exit slip and back on at the entry slip (up and over).
Diversion Route:
- Use the M25 and M26 instead.
- Those travelling on the M25 clockwise towards Maidstone are advised to take the A2 coastbound at J2, continue on the M2, then join the A249 southbound at J5.
The spokesperson added, “Kent Fire and Rescue Service has three fire engines in attendance, assisting Kent Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service.” All traffic is being held both ways between Junction 1 (M25) and Junction 3 (M26) while the coast-bound entry slip from the clockwise M25 remains blocked.
Avoid the Area – Expect Massive Delays
Authorities urge drivers to steer clear of the area and brace for significant hold-ups. With lanes closed and emergency services still at the scene, travellers should plan alternate routes to avoid being caught in the snarl-up.
