Newhaven Chaos: Christmas Lights Spark Three-Mile Traffic Jam

Commuters in Newhaven faced a nightmare morning rush as contractors installing Christmas lights blocked a lane on the one-way C7 junction. The move during peak hours caused traffic tailbacks stretching over three miles, leaving drivers fuming and stuck in gridlock.

Council Slams Contractor for Rush Hour Misstep

Newhaven Town Council was quick to apologise, distancing itself from the bungled timing of the Christmas lights installation. Town Clerk Ken Dry blasted the contractors for ignoring usual protocols and causing havoc during busy morning traffic.

“The Town Council is very much aware of the inconvenience and consternation caused by the ill-advised actions of our Christmas Lights contractor this morning. Please accept our apologies for this,” said Mr Dry.

“They were supposed to work late at night or early morning to avoid disruption. Their decision to work during rush hour was inappropriate and without the Council’s knowledge. We have taken this up with them in the strongest possible terms to prevent it happening again.”

Drivers Fuming Over Avoidable Tailbacks

Traffic-bound drivers vented their anger on social media, branding the morning chaos “avoidable” and “poorly managed.”

  • One tweeted: “Three miles of traffic chaos because someone thought rush hour was the perfect time to hang Christmas lights? Seriously?”
  • Another added, “This should never have happened—absolute madness.”

Looking Ahead: Council Vows No More Disruptive Delays

The Council has promised tighter oversight on all future streetworks to stop commuters being stuck again. While locals love the annual Christmas lights display, this year’s painful installation has left a bitter taste.

As Newhaven prepares for the festive season, hopes are high the town’s streets will sparkle without causing any more traffic misery.
