Portsmouth RNLI Proudly Salutes Its Female Lifeboat Heroes on International Women’s Day

Today is International Women’s Day, and Portsmouth RNLI is shouting loud for the incredible women on their crew. Lifeboat teams were once all-male, but now more women are stepping up, risking their lives to save others at sea.

A Day with Powerful Roots

International Women’s Day began as a campaign for women’s rights. It started back in 1909 with the Socialist Party of America’s Women’s Day in New York on February 28. A year later, the 1910 International Socialist Women’s Conference called for an annual celebration to push for equality.
