Wedding Fire Horror in Iraq: 113 Dead, Over 150 Injured
A tragic wedding celebration in Iraq’s Nineveh province turned deadly as fire ripped through the event hall, claiming at least 113 lives and injuring more than 150. The devastating blaze broke out late Tuesday night in Hamdaniyah district, near Mosul.
Deadly Blaze Sparks from Fireworks
Deputy Governor Hassan al-Allaq confirmed the grim death toll, while provincial governor Najim al-Jubouri warned the numbers may climb as rescue and recovery efforts continue. The fire ignited around 10:45pm local time, shattering what was meant to be a night of joy.
Authorities believe fireworks, a common feature at Iraqi weddings, sparked the inferno. Civil defence officials say the pyrotechnics ignited highly flammable materials inside the hall, leading to a fast-spreading firestorm.
Safety Failures Worsen Tragedy
Further tragedy struck due to the event hall’s poor construction and lack of safety measures. The venue reportedly used flammable prefabricated panels that violated safety regulations. Emergency exits were either insufficient or blocked.
Scenes from the aftermath show collapsed ceilings, twisted metal, and debris – a stark reminder of the blaze’s fury. Emergency crews battled through rubble to reach trapped survivors.
Government Responds with Full Probe and Aid
Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani ordered a full investigation and called on Interior and Health ministries to deliver urgent support to victims and families. The Ministry of Health dispatched medical aid trucks from Baghdad and other provinces to assist with rescue and treatment.
The country is in shock following the heartbreaking disaster, with grief and condolences pouring in from across Iraq.
