Tragedy in the English Channel: Six Dead, Dozens Rescued
Shock and sorrow struck early Saturday as a small boat carrying about 50 people ran into trouble in the English Channel. French authorities confirmed six have died, while around 50 were rescued in a massive search effort.
UK and French Forces Launch Major Rescue Operation
Two British ships joined forces with several French vessels in a desperate bid to save lives. France’s Maritime Prefecture of the Channel and the North Sea described the grim incident, highlighting the scale of the emergency response.
Among the rescued, six were seriously injured. One critically ill victim was airlifted by helicopter to Calais Hospital but later died, adding to the heartbreak sweeping the region.
Coastguard and Rescue Teams Work Round the Clock
On the UK side, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency sprang into action, teaming up closely with French counterparts. An agency spokesperson said: “HM Coastguard is currently assisting the French authorities, Gris Nez, in a search and rescue response to an incident involving a small boat in the Channel.”
The operation involved Dover RNLI lifeboat crews, Folkestone and Langdon Bay coastguard rescue teams, and Southeast Coast Ambulance Service pulling out all the stops.
Home Office Confirms Ongoing Investigation
