Refrigeration Unit Sparks Fiery Inferno at Sainsbury’s Warehouse
A refrigeration unit on a trailer next to Sainsbury’s Thameside depot in Charlton may have sparked a huge blaze on Saturday night, our sources reveal. The fire ripped through two lorries and damaged parts of the warehouse in a dramatic scene.
70 Firefighters Battle Blaze, 120 Staff Evacuated
About 70 firefighters, including six fire engines and an aerial ladder from multiple London fire stations, battled the flames after being called at 6:39pm. They swiftly contained the fire, which started around 6:30pm and spread from the trailers to the warehouse building.
All 120 staff on-site were evacuated safely before the fire crews arrived. The fire was largely under control by 8:35pm.
Warehouse Suffering Smoke and Flame Damage
The fire damaged two HGV trailers, another lorry, and four loading bays. The side of the warehouse suffered smoke damage, and several doors were ruined by flames and smoke.
Warning Issued After Similar Incident
The London Fire Brigade has launched an investigation, urging businesses to avoid parking vehicles close to buildings. This follows a similar accidental fire at the same warehouse a few months ago.
Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a single-storey warehouse fire on Lombard Wall in Charlton,” a London Fire Brigade spokesman said. “Two lorries were gutted by fire. A further lorry and four loading bays were also damaged. The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
