Hero Firefighters Save Woman After Horror Hit-and-Run

Off-duty Crew Manager Kieran Hughes sprang into action last July when he heard a terrifying report: a member of the public had been run over on Stanhope’s front street. Without hesitation, Kieran rushed to the scene, joined by Firefighters Joshua Roberts and Jamie Clarkson, who had also been alerted.

Immediate Life-Saving Action

At the scene, they found a woman lying with severe injuries. No medical help was present, so the trio began emergency treatment right away. Using their Tri-Responder pack, they administered oxygen therapy and controlled the bleeding to stabilise her until the air ambulance arrived.

Second Casualty in Critical Condition

While treating the victim, another bystander showed signs of severe shock — hyperventilating and losing consciousness. Realising their oxygen supplies were limited, Kieran dashed back to the station, called for backup, and grabbed a trauma pack from the Stanhope appliance to provide extra oxygen.

He returned to the scene and, with Joshua and Jamie, gave life-saving care to the second casualty. Kieran later led the air ambulance crew directly to the injured woman, ensuring swift medical attention.

Chief Fire Officer Praises Brave Crew

Chief Officer Stuart Errington awarded commendations to Kieran and Jamie today, praising their heroism. He said, “I am immensely proud of them all. Not only did they treat the casualties while off duty, but their vital lifesaving actions undoubtedly saved a life that day.”

Unfortunately, Firefighter Roberts was unable to attend the ceremony but will receive his certificate soon.
