Off-Duty Firefighters Race to Save Woman After Shocking Hit-and-Run
Last July, Crew Manager Kieran Hughes was at home when he heard about a dreadful accident on Stanhope’s front street—a member of the public had been run over by a vehicle. Without hesitation, Kieran dashed out and raced to the scene.
Heroic Trio Team Up at Scene of Serious Collision
On arrival, Kieran met Firefighters Joshua Roberts and Jamie Clarkson, who were also alerted. They found a woman lying on the ground, badly injured, with no medical help in sight. The three didn’t waste a second—they jumped straight into action.
Using their Tri-Responder pack, they started lifesaving treatment. They administered oxygen therapy and controlled the bleeding, trying to stabilise her while waiting for the air ambulance.
Another Victim in Shock – Firefighters Stretch Resources to Save Two Lives
As they treated the woman, another bystander started showing severe signs of shock—hyperventilating and slipping in and out of consciousness. Realising their oxygen supplies were limited, Kieran sprinted back to the fire station. He called in the Stanhope fire appliance and grabbed an extra trauma pack loaded with oxygen.
Returning swiftly, Kieran and his colleagues treated the second victim with oxygen and first aid. Meanwhile, Kieran played a key role in guiding the air ambulance crew to the scene.
Chief Fire Officer Hails Their Bravery
Chief 1 Officer Stuart Errington recently handed out commendations to Kieran and Jamie for their heroic efforts. “I am immensely proud of them all,” said Stuart. “Not only did they step up off duty, but the vital lifesaving treatment they provided undoubtedly prevented fatalities that day.”
Sadly, Firefighter Roberts was unable to attend the ceremony but will receive his certificate soon.
