Police Probe Continues After Teen’s Tragic M5 Death

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is diving deeper into Avon and Somerset Police’s actions after 17-year-old Tamzin Hall died on the M5 earlier this month. The investigation is gathering pace as questions swirl over what really happened.

What Went Down on the M5?

Tamzin was being taken to a custody suite in Bridgwater after being arrested in Taunton following a disturbance on November 11. Around 10:40 PM, she was handcuffed in the back of a police Toyota Corolla, with an officer seated next to her.

Police say the car pulled over onto the hard shoulder near junctions 25 and 24 just before 11 PM for “safety reasons.” It was then that Tamzin got out of the vehicle and was tragically hit by a passing car on the opposite carriageway. Despite rapid paramedic response, she died at the scene.

IOPC Investigation Heats Up

  • The watchdog has collected witness statements and reviewed CCTV and bodycam footage.
  • Both officers involved have received misconduct notices. This signals possible failures in their duty — but doesn’t imply guilt.
  • The IOPC is weighing up whether to pursue disciplinary action.

“My thoughts and sympathies remain with Tamzin’s family and everyone affected by this tragic event,” said David Ford, IOPC Regional Director.

“We aim to uncover every detail from her arrest to the fatal moments on the M5, keeping her family updated throughout.”

Ongoing Inquest & Family Support

An inquest into Tamzin’s death has been opened but paused while investigations continue. The IOPC has met with her family, offering condolences and a clear explanation of the process ahead. Community members are demanding a full, transparent probe into police decisions on that fateful night.

The tragic loss of Tamzin Hall has left a mark on the community, amplifying calls for urgent review of police protocols to prevent another heartbreak on Britain’s roads.
