Two Injured in Dredger Blast off Cornwall – Dramatic Airlift Rescue Underway
A major rescue mission kicked off today after an explosion rocked a dredger off Cornwall’s coast. The UK Coastguard sprang into action just before 1pm following an emergency call from the vessel south of Dodman Point.
Compressed Air Cylinder Explosion Sparks Chaos
Reports suggest a compressed air cylinder on board the dredger exploded, injuring two of the three crew members. The blast left one seriously hurt, though thankfully not life-threatening.
Heroic Helicopter and Lifeboat Teams Join Forces
- The Newquay Coastguard helicopter and the Falmouth RNLI Lifeboat raced to the scene.
- Two injured crew were swiftly airlifted to Derriford Hospital.
- The Royal Navy Fleet Auxiliary ship and a Fisheries Protection vessel provided crucial support.
“The Fisheries Protection vessel crew and Falmouth RNLI’s help was invaluable – true inter-agency teamwork,” said Captain Darren Manswer of the Newquay Coastguard helicopter crew.
Vessel Safe and Under Tow – Investigation Underway
Despite the blast, the dredger remains seaworthy and poses no fire risk. The Fowey All Weather Lifeboat has secured the vessel and is towing it into harbour. Falmouth Lifeboat will assist after bringing the third, uninjured crewman ashore.
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch has been notified, with a probe into what caused the explosion now underway.
