Covid Scare at Wyvern College: No Risk to Students, Says Headteacher

Wyvern College has reassured parents after a teacher tested positive for Covid-19. Headteacher Ben Rule confirmed that the Department for Education (DfE) has declared “no further action is required” and that there is no risk to students.

Teacher Self-Isolated Before Symptoms Appeared

Mr Rule revealed the maths teacher began showing symptoms on Friday, 2nd October, but had already been isolating since Monday, 28th September due to a family illness. “We’ve worked closely with the DfE’s public health team to identify close contacts,” he said.

The DfE confirmed no students or staff were in close contact with the teacher during the critical 48-hour period before symptoms showed. In fact, no staff were on-site on Friday 25th September (INSET day), and the teacher did not work on Thursday 24th, meaning the risk of transmission is very low.

Activate Gym Also Hit by Positive Case

In a separate case, a member of the Activate gym tested positive on Friday evening. The college has worked with Track and Trace to notify anyone who was at the gym during the same session.

Public Health England has also ruled out any further action here, citing thorough cleaning, strict hygiene, social distancing, and staggered gym use away from students.

Wyvern Urges Continued Vigilance

Mr Rule urged the college community to keep up social distancing, wear face coverings, and maintain good hand and respiratory hygiene.

“Symptoms of Covid typically include a high temperature, dry persistent cough, and loss of taste or smell. If your child shows any symptoms, please keep them at home and arrange a test,” he added.

Wyvern College remains fully compliant with Government guidance on school and gym safety during the pandemic.
