Hero Coastguard Dives In To Rescue Couple Trapped In Rough Waters At Folkestone Harbour
Dramatic Rescue at Folkestone Harbour
Drama unfolded around 5pm on October 8 when a man and woman got into serious trouble while rowing a tender to a moored vessel at Folkestone Harbour. The man became tangled in a rope, his head just above water, while the woman struggled as their boat started filling fast.
Quick-Thinking Coastguard Saves The Day
The Folkestone Coastguard Rescue Team (CRT) and Langdon CRT rushed to the scene. Backup was sent from the Dover Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, including an HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter and the RNLI Littlestone lifeboat. But with the situation getting worse fast, Coastguard Rescue Officer Tom Nunnen-Wills took immediate action.
Wearing a lifejacket and secured by a lifeline, Tom plunged into the water. He carefully freed the man from the ropes without causing panic. Both were hauled safely ashore by the Coastguard team. Tom then steadied the sinking tender and helped get the woman out of danger.
All Survive Thanks To Coastguard Bravery
Thankfully, neither victim was injured. The South East Ambulance Service checked them over as a precaution. Tom reflected, “The adrenaline was running… we had to make a quick decision. Afterwards, it was rewarding to know our training had paid off.”
Safety Warning For Boaters
Tom urged boaters to always wear lifejackets and carry personal locator beacons. The Coastguard reminded everyone that the sea can turn dangerous quickly, making safety gear and caution absolutely essential.
