Storm Antoni Set to Batter UK with Fierce Winds and Torrential Rain
The UK is gearing up for the first named storm of the season, Storm Antoni, bringing unseasonably strong winds and heavy rain this weekend. The Met Office has sounded two yellow weather warnings for Northern Ireland and the southwest of Britain.
Gusts Up to 65mph and Flood Risks
Coastal areas face ferocious gusts up to 65mph, while inland spots in South Wales and southwest England could see winds reaching 55mph. The storm hits late on Friday night, continuing into Saturday. It poses a “danger to life” due to flying debris, large waves, and beach material being hurled onto sea fronts, coastal roads, and properties.
Persistent downpours risk flash flooding and major travel disruptions nationwide. Met Office chief meteorologist Steve Willington warns Northern Ireland will bear the brunt, with 40-60mm of rain in some locations and widespread 20-30mm falls. North Wales and northern England face soggy conditions too.
Coastal Areas Brace for High Tides and Fierce Winds
Southwest England and southwest Wales will take the worst of the wind, with exposed coasts and high ground seeing gusts over 60mph. Inland spots could face 50-55mph, coinciding with high tides and worsening coastal risks.
The RAC has issued a stark warning for drivers. Saturday could be the worst day on roads all summer. RAC’s Rod Dennis urged motorists to slow down, avoid exposed moorlands and coastal routes, and stay alert.
Warning to Holidaymakers and Commuters: Stay Safe
The Met Office cautions holidaymakers, day-trippers, and motorists to take extra care. Trees weakened by recent storms may uproot, power lines could come down, and sudden flash floods or spray may create hazardous driving conditions.
Thankfully, Storm Antoni is expected to pass relatively fast, clearing eastern coasts by Saturday evening. But with many out and about this busy weekend, officials urge everyone to monitor weather updates and prepare for potential disruptions.
