UK Space Agency Pumps £2.5M into Satellite Projects to Boost Public Services
The UK Space Agency has just announced a £2.5 million investment in five ground-breaking projects across the UK. Using satellite technology, these initiatives aim to revolutionise public services from infrastructure safety to environmental monitoring.
Space Tech Meets Public Service
Unveiled at the European Space Agency’s Living Planet Symposium 2025 in Vienna, the funding connects space firms with local councils and government bodies. Their goal? Solve real-world problems like biodiversity tracking and methane emissions with advanced satellite data.
Harshbir Sangha, Director of Missions and Capabilities at the UK Space Agency, said:
“By bringing together innovative space companies with public sector partners, we’re demonstrating that space technology delivers practical benefits here on Earth… This investment reflects our commitment to establishing the UK as a global leader in space-enabled public services.”
The Five Game-Changing Projects
- Geospatial Ventures (nottingham/" title="Nottingham" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Nottingham) – Radar and AI system detects early warning signs of stress in bridges, buildings, and infrastructure.
- AAC Clyde Space (Glasgow) – Satellite imaging helps farmers monitor biodiversity and qualify for sustainable farming incentives.
- GHGSat UK – Methane-tracking platform utilises satellites to monitor industrial greenhouse gas emissions, supporting net-zero goals.
- Earth-i – Provides satellite environmental data to the Rural Payments Agency to improve land use oversight and subsidy schemes.
- HR Wallingford (Oxfordshire) – Partners with Water Resources South East, using Earth Observation to monitor biodiversity and protect nature.
Colin Baldwin, Executive Director of UKspace, welcomed the announcement:
“This investment is very welcome… we are encouraged to see the Government recognising the opportunity. Several UKspace member companies are benefiting from this programme.”
UK-Driven TRUTHS Satellite Mission Gains Momentum
At the same event, the UK secured a key contract for the TRUTHS satellite mission. Telespazio UK will build the ground segment infrastructure to collect and distribute critical climate data worldwide.
TRUTHS (Traceable Radiometry Underpinning Terrestrial and Helio Studies) is a flagship UK-led Earth climate monitoring project in partnership with ESA. This mission will provide vital tools to scientists and policymakers fighting climate change.
New £300,000 Climate Innovation Fund Launched
The UK Space Agency also revealed a new funding call for small Earth Observation projects tackling climate change, nature protection, and planetary resilience.
Grants ranging from £40,000 to £80,000 will support early-stage innovators across the UK, complementing the UK Government’s new Industrial Strategy that heralds space as a key industry for the nation’s economy and security.
