Weekend Weather Warning: Wind and Rain Set to Batter UK

The Met Office has issued fresh weather warnings for Saturday as unseasonably strong winds and heavy rain brace the UK for a soggy start to August.

Stormy Start to August

Following what’s been the sixth wettest July on record in the UK, the wet and wild theme is far from over. A deep low-pressure system will sweep in late Friday night, bringing hefty rains and gusty winds across large swathes of the country.

Northern Ireland is set to bear the brunt first, with rain warnings kicking in from the early hours of Saturday. Southern and western Wales, southwest England, and much of England’s south coast face strong wind warnings as well.

Met Office Warns of Disruptive Conditions

“There’s some potentially disruptive weather on the way on Saturday,” said Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Steven Keates. “Northern Ireland could see between 40-60mm of rain in spots, with 20-30mm more widely. North Wales and northwest England won’t escape the heavy downpours either.”

“Strongest winds are expected in the southwest UK – Wales, southwest England, and along the south coast. Coastal gusts could top 60mph, with inland gusts around 50mph in some areas. With trees still in full leaf and wet ground, impacts could be worse than usual.”

He added that the blustery conditions will likely coincide with high tides, raising concerns for coastal flooding and disruption.

Travel Chaos and Power Cuts Possible

The warnings alert Brits to potential travel delays and power outages. If you’re worried about flooding at home, check your postcode on the official flood risk checker.

Any Hope for Sunshine?

After weeks of grey skies and wet weather, there’s a glimmer of hope for drier conditions later next week. Steven Keates explains:

“There are signs the jet stream may shift, allowing high pressure to build across southern parts of the UK. This could bring a spell of drier weather, but some northern areas might still see rain. It’s too early for certainty – watch this space.”

For now, Brits should brace for a rough and rainy weekend with possible travel headaches and coastal challenges ahead.
