UK and South Korea Team Up to Crack Fusion Energy

The UK and South Korea are joining forces to fast-track fusion energy – the holy grail of clean power. The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and Korea Institute of Fusion Energy (KFE) have signed a game-changing memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on cutting-edge research for remote handling and maintenance of future fusion powerplants.

High-Tech Exchange Kicks Off at Culham

The partnership kicked off last week with five KFE researchers visiting UKAEA’s Culham Campus near Oxford. They toured the record-breaking Joint European Torus (JET) facility and the world-renowned robotics centre, RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments), where robots tackle the toughest industrial jobs.

Both UKAEA and KFE play vital roles in the global fusion effort, feeding expertise into ITER – the massive international reactor being built in southern France. UKAEA’s JET mimics ITER’s design and relies on robotics for maintenance. Meanwhile, KFE runs KSTAR, the only tokamak using superconducting tech like ITER’s. Remote handling and robotics knowledge are crucial for both.

Shared Mission: Making Fusion a Reality

The MOU will have both sides swapping skills and tech on remote maintenance, from welding and large-scale robotic arms to developing rugged electronics. Workshops, lectures, and training placements will run in both countries to ramp up expertise.

UKAEA CEO, Professor Sir Ian Chapman: “Fusion could transform energy security and fight climate change. The pioneering work in the UK and globally aims to make fusion energy real. We welcome KFE to Culham and look forward to a partnership focused on fusion’s future.”

KFE President, Dr Suk Jae Yoo: “We’re excited to team up with UKAEA, leaders in fusion robotics. While UKAEA excels with robotic arms, KFE brings extensive experience from running KSTAR. Together, we’ll create cutting-edge remote control systems and accelerate fusion development.”

RACE: Robotics at the Heart of Fusion

Since launching in 2016, UKAEA’s RACE centre has pioneered robotic tech for extreme environments too dangerous for people. This ties into the UK Government’s Robotics & Autonomous Systems strategy, helping the UK lead in this booming global field.

This UK-South Korea fusion alliance signals a major leap towards cleaner, safer energy powered by the stars.
