Rogue Uni Courses to Be Cut Back as PM Cracks Down on Degree Rip-Offs

The Prime Minister and Education Secretary have unveiled tough new plans to protect students and taxpayers from worthless university courses that see high drop-out rates, poor job prospects, and sky-high debts.

Office for Students to Clamp Down on Dodgy Degrees

The Office for Students (OfS) will now have the power to limit how many students universities can take on courses that fail to deliver real results. While the UK boasts some of the world’s best universities, a worrying few courses leave students with nothing but debt and dashed hopes.

“We will not allow students to be sold a false promise,” said a government spokesperson. “Students deserve courses that equip them with skills to land great jobs and back the Prime Minister’s economic growth agenda.”

Experts Back the Crackdown on Low-Quality Courses

  • Philip Augar, chair of the independent Review of Post-18 Education and Funding:

“This is a strong signal for universities to stop recruiting onto courses not in students’ best interests. I hope the sector responds constructively.”

  • Edward Peck, nottingham/" title="Nottingham" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Nottingham Trent University Vice-Chancellor:

“The government’s reforms align with the Augar Review recommendations, including linking foundation year fees with access courses and using graduate salaries to assess course quality.

  • Baroness Alison Wolf, panel member:

“I’m pleased the government is reining in the unjustified surge in foundation year courses. Aligning fees with further education will improve consistency and outcomes.”

Boost for Apprenticeships and Skills Training

Alongside these education reforms, the government is ramping up apprenticeships and vocational training. Plans include expanding UCAS so students can apply for apprenticeships alongside degrees, making it easier for employers to take on apprentices by slashing registration steps, and updating courses to reflect new tech in sectors like construction and healthcare.

A new digital platform launching this autumn will let people and employers access everything from apprenticeships and T Levels to Skills Bootcamps in one place, making training opportunities easier to find.

Small Biz Leaders Welcome Changes

  • Anthony Impey, CEO of Be The Business:

“Small businesses are overstretched and time-poor. These changes will open up apprenticeships and help boost productivity at just the right time.”

  • FD Works, top SME apprentice employer:

“Apprentices bring passion and fresh ideas. These reforms show the Department for Education listens to small business needs and is improving the system.”

  • Jane Gratton, British Chambers of Commerce:

“Apprenticeships tackle skills shortages, but many firms struggle with bureaucracy. Government steps to reduce red tape and raise awareness are very welcome.”

With these bold moves, the government aims to end degree rip-offs, boost job-ready graduates, and power up UK skills and productivity for the future.
