TfL Rolls Out New Speed Cameras on the A2 in Major Safety Drive
Fresh Cameras, Same Speed Limits
Transport for London (TfL) has kicked off an upgrade of average speed cameras along the A2. The aim? To boost road safety with shiny new tech. The current cameras, installed back in 2015 and 2016, are nearing retirement. Replacement is due by mid-February.
Don’t worry, no changes to speed limits or road layouts are coming. Most work will happen at night with only single lane closures, keeping disruptions minimal. Roads will stay open as usual.
Cutting Deaths with Better Tech
The new cameras boast sharper images and faster processing for the Metropolitan Police, making it tougher for speeders to get away. Mandy McGregor, Head of Transport Policing and Community Safety at TfL, stressed the urgency.
“We’re determined to reduce road danger caused by speeding as part of our Vision Zero commitment to eliminate death and serious injury from London’s roads by 2041.”
“Last year, speeding was a factor in over half of fatal road collisions in London, and these collisions were all preventable. Our cameras are aging, so this upgrade is essential.”
Vision Zero: London’s Road Safety Goal
This camera overhaul is a key part of London’s Vision Zero strategy to wipe out road deaths and serious injuries by 2041. With smarter enforcement tech, TfL is urging drivers to stick to speed limits. Speeding still tops the list of causes behind deadly crashes.
These upgrades are a vital step to make London’s streets safer for all.
