A tense sea rescue unfolded near Great Western Beach, Newquay, Cornwall, on Saturday night after reports of a missing person in the water triggered a frantic emergency response.
Huge Multi-Agency Rescue Launched
The alert saw Newquay Coastguard, Newquay RNLI Lifeboats, HM Coastguard Padstow, and a rescue helicopter scramble to the scene. Devon and Cornwall Police also joined the hunt along the coastline.
A spokesperson from Newquay Coastguard said: “At 5.08pm, we were alerted to a casualty in the water near Great Western. All teams immediately launched a thorough search of the area.”
Second Incident Diverts Rescue Teams
As the search roared on, a second emergency call came from Porth Island reporting another casualty. The rescue teams divided – half rushing to assist at Porth Island, while the others stuck to the Great Western search.
“Newquay CRT, Newquay Lifeboats, and St Agnes Coastguard were tasked to assist with the Porth Island casualty,” the spokesperson added. “Fortunately, the second emergency was resolved quickly and all assets at Porth were stood down.”
Search Suspended, Mystery Remains
After hours of scouring the waters, Newquay Coastguard Search and Rescue Team confirmed the operation at Great Western Beach was “suspended pending further enquiries.” The missing person’s identity and condition are still unknown.
Officials are urging everyone to stay vigilant near water and strictly follow safety advice, especially at busy beaches popular with locals and tourists.
