Liverpool Snubbed by VAR Error in Nail-biting Tottenham Loss
Liverpool’s hopes took a huge hit after a shocking VAR blunder wiped out a crucial goal in their 2-1 defeat to Tottenham on Saturday. The error left fans and players fuming, with match officials swiftly dropped from duties for the rest of the Premier League weekend.
PGMOL Admits ‘Significant Human Error’
The referees’ body, PGMOL, conceded there was a “significant human error” when a VAR review wrongly flagged Luis Diaz offside, even though his strike should have counted with the score at 0-0. The mistake massively altered the game’s momentum.
VAR Officials Sacked for Weekend Fixtures
- VAR chief Darren England, who was set to be fourth official for Nottingham Forest vs Brentford, has been pulled from duty.
- Assistant VAR Dan Cook, scheduled to assist at the Fulham vs Chelsea derby, has also been replaced.
Both officials have been taken off after their roles in the pivotal error.
Drama on the Pitch as Liverpool Fall Late
The match exploded into chaos with Spurs snatching the winner via a 96th-minute own goal from Liverpool’s Joel Matip. To make matters worse, Liverpool saw Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota sent off on either side of the break — adding insult to injury.
Jurgen Klopp slammed the decisions, branding the whole affair “unfair” and “crazy.” Meanwhile, PGMOL chief Howard Webb offered a public apology to Liverpool, admitting the mistake should have led to Diaz’s goal being awarded. “This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded,” Webb said.
The gaffe has sparked outrage and intensified debate over VAR’s reliability in the Premier League.
