WhatsApp to Drop Support for Old iPhones from May 2025

Heads up, iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus users: WhatsApp is pulling the plug on your messaging app from May 5, 2025. If you’re still on one of these classic Apple models, you won’t be able to send or receive WhatsApp messages anymore.

Why Is WhatsApp Cutting Off Old iPhones?

WhatsApp is raising its minimum system requirements to iOS 15.1 and above. That means anyone clinging to older devices must either upgrade or lose access to the world’s favourite messaging app.

A WhatsApp spokesperson said:

“Every year we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest users. These devices also might not have the latest security updates, or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp.”

They added:

“Devices and software change often, so we regularly review what operating systems we support and make updates. Before we stop supporting your operating system, you’ll be notified in WhatsApp and reminded a few times to upgrade.”

Why This Matters

  • iPhone 5s, 6 and 6 Plus were discontinued by Apple years ago, some going obsolete in 2016.
  • Old devices no longer get Apple security patches, leaving WhatsApp users vulnerable.
  • The move nudges users towards newer devices with better security and features.

What Should Users Do?

To keep chatting on WhatsApp after May 5, 2025, think about upgrading your iPhone to a model running at least iOS 15.1. Staying on a vintage device won’t just cut you off from WhatsApp—it could put your security at risk.

So, don’t get caught out. Time to toss that dinosaur and step into the future with a new iPhone.
