Yarmouth Lifeboat Rescues Yacht Trapped by Fishing Net
Yarmouth’s Severn class all-weather lifeboat, Eric and Susan Hiscock (Wanderer), was scrambled by HM Coastguard on Monday, 24 May 2021 at 2:13pm. The mission: rescue a 45-foot yacht stuck with a fouled propeller northeast of Yarmouth near Bouldnor Bay.
Yacht Paralysed by Discarded Fishing Net
When Yarmouth RNLI’s volunteer crew arrived, they found the yacht’s rudder and propeller tangled in a discarded fishing net. The trapped vessel was unable to move under engine or sail. The crew had lost control and faced a tricky situation at sea.
Swift Tow Back to Safety
The lifeboat team quickly secured a tow alongside the disabled yacht. Coxswain Howard Lester praised the crew’s quick thinking: “Knowing how to call for help when needed meant the yacht and crew were rescued quickly and safely.” The lifeboat returned to Yarmouth harbour and was back on duty by 5:08pm.
RNLI: Saving Lives Thanks to Public Donations
The RNLI remains an independent charity, relying on voluntary donations to fund its lifesaving work. Their expert crews stand ready around the clock to answer emergency calls at sea.
