Storm Gerrit Set to Slam UK Coasts with 70mph Gales
The Met Office has slapped yellow weather warnings across the UK as Storm Gerrit barrels in. Gusts up to 70mph will lash exposed coastlines, bringing heavy rain and snow this Wednesday and Thursday.
RNLI Sounds Alarm: Danger Along Cliffs and Seafronts
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is urging everyone to stay sharp around coastal areas. Strong winds and wild waves risk knocking people off their feet or sweeping them into the sea.
“The forecasted strong winds along with heavy rain and snow are likely to cause dangerous conditions for those visiting the coast around the UK and Ireland,” warned Gareth Morrison, RNLI Water Safety Partner. “Stay a safe distance from the water and cliff edges—it’s just not worth risking your life.”
How to Stay Safe and Help Others
Morrison offered crucial tips for spotting and responding to emergencies during the storm:
- If you see someone in trouble near the water, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
- Throw them floating aids if you have them—don’t jump in yourself and risk becoming another casualty.
RNLI’s Top Safety Tips for Stormy Weather
- Keep back from stormy seas and cliff edges to avoid being swept away by waves or gusts.
- Check weather forecasts and tide times before heading out to stay ahead of hazards.
- Take a phone with you in case you need to call for help or alert emergency services.
Storm Gerrit is shaping up to be a serious threat—stay safe and think twice before visiting the coast this week.
