New Flood Warning Service to Shield Thousands in Yorkshire

The Environment Agency has launched a sharp new flood warning service covering eight key areas across Yorkshire. This move protects 2,557 properties with real-time alerts about looming flood risks.

Stay Ahead of the Floods with Free Alerts

Residents can sign up for free flood warnings sent straight to their phone or via text. The service issues alerts when flooding is expected and updates if impacts are likely, giving households crucial time to prepare.

There are three clear warning levels:

  • Flood Alert: Time to pack essentials like medicines and insurance papers.
  • Flood Warning: Act now – turn off gas, water, and electrics. Get family and pets to safety.
  • Severe Flood Warning: Immediate danger. Follow emergency services’ instructions without delay.

More Homes Protected Thanks to Cutting-Edge Tech

This upgrade isn’t just local—110,000 more homes and businesses across England can now get flood warnings. Properties once considered too remote or tricky to reach are now covered thanks to new tech developed by the Environment Agency.

“We know the devastating impact that flooding can have, which is why protecting people and communities is our top priority,” said Environment Agency’s flood resilience lead, Graham Lindsey.

“These warnings help people prepare and act fast. We urge everyone in the new flood zones to sign up this winter for peace of mind and safety.”

Flood Warning Zones Now Include:

  • Oil Mill Beck at Horsforth Woodside
  • Black Brook from Bowers Mill to Berry Mill Lane, Calderdale
  • Bradford Beck and tributaries, Bradford
  • Hunsworth Beck at Oakenshaw
  • Went Beck at Purston Jaglin, Wakefield
  • River Esk at Ruswarp
  • River Esk at Glaisdale
  • River Esk at Danby

Over 1.6 million people across England already rely on this flood warning system. It combines river data, weather forecasts, and models for pinpoint accuracy to keep communities safe.
