Geoffrey Hinton, one of AI’s leading voices, has raised alarm bells over the rapid rise of artificial intelligence. Speaking to The New York Times, he warned that fast-paced AI advances could spell big trouble for society and humanity itself.
Experts Call for AI Development Freeze
In response to these risks, a high-profile letter demanding a pause on AI development has been signed by over 1,000 tech heavyweights— including Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. The urgent plea followed the launch of GPT-4, the latest and most powerful AI model behind ChatGPT.
Hinton’s Caution Stands Out
Although Hinton didn’t sign the letter, he echoed the call for caution. He warned against powering up AI systems before scientists fully understand how to control their capabilities. “AI can revolutionise society,” he said, “but only if developed responsibly.”
