Millions of UK workers to get a payday boost this weekend! The National Minimum Wage rates are set for a major uplift starting Saturday, April 1.

National Living Wage Soars by Nearly 10%

The National Living Wage (NLW) for workers aged 23 and over jumps 9.7% to £10.42 an hour. Young workers aged 21-22 won’t be left out either, with their pay rising 10.9% to £10.18 per hour. Even younger staff and apprentices will see a pay hike of 9.7%, giving thousands of low-paid workers a much-needed financial boost.

Government Moves Closer to 2024 Pay Target

This big pay rise follows recommendations by the Low Pay Commission (LPC) last autumn. The increase pushes the NLW closer to the Government’s aim of reaching two-thirds of median earnings by 2024. Importantly, this hike restores much of the real wage value lost since April 2021, helping low earners fight back against soaring living costs.

What’s Next for Minimum Wage?

The LPC has kicked off a consultation on wage rates for April 2024 and beyond, running from March 23 to June 9, 2023. They’re asking workers and employers for their views on future wage policies after the 2024 target is hit. Recommendations to the Government will come this October. Low Pay Commission Chair Speaks Out

“From April, millions will benefit from these NMW and NLW rises. Despite economic turmoil, unemployment is low and the labour market is strong,” said Bryan Sanderson, LPC Chair.

“High inflation hits low-paid workers hardest, so this increase is vital. The new NLW rate keeps us on track for the 2024 target. We expect the wage to need rising again next year to between £10.90 and £11.43. We also plan to lower the NLW age threshold to 21 in 2024,” he added.

“This year’s consultation invites views on what happens after meeting the 2024 target. The minimum wage is a key part of the UK labour market, and all voices matter in shaping its future.”

The LPC’s latest report outlines the challenges of forecasting future wage growth amid the uncertain economy. Their central prediction is an NLW of £11.16 in 2024, with a possible range between £10.90 and £11.43.
