Hackney Groomer Jailed for 28 Years After Systematic Abuse Uncovered
A Hackney man has been locked up for 28 years after a relentless probe into his vile abuse of a young girl. Anthony Maina, 52, from Stoke Newington, was convicted of 17 charges, including rape and sexual assault, at Wood Green Crown Court.
Horrific Abuse Uncovered After Years of Manipulation
Maina used his position of trust to groom and exploit the victim over several years. He showered her with gifts, controlled her every move, and isolated her from family and friends, branding her “his girl” and “his best friend in the universe.” His tactics were chilling.
- Accused her of neglect if she didn’t contact him daily
- Labeled her peers as a ‘bad influence’
- Forced visits under false pretences like parcel deliveries or workmen
When the survivor reported the abuse in December 2018, police acted fast to protect her. The complex investigation took three years, led by Detective Constable Stefan Wimmer, who called the case “some of the most vile and despicable psychological manipulation and sexual abuse” he’d seen.
Survivor’s Bravery Helps Put Predator Behind Bars
Maina showed zero remorse and even tried to smear the victim as a troublemaker. But the survivor’s courage never wavered. She urged other victims to speak out, saying:
“To all survivors going through abuse, I’d encourage you to come forward. I didn’t think I’d get this outcome, but now he’s sentenced and will be in prison for years. You won’t have to endure it anymore. Be patient and strong. It will lift a weight off your shoulders.”
Met Police Praise Team and Vow Support for Abuse Victims
Detective Superintendent Charmaine Laurencin praised the team’s dedication in a “challenging and disturbing” case. She reaffirmed the Met’s commitment to supporting survivors with specialist units ready to listen and investigate abuse, no matter when it happened.
