Second Aussie Teen Dies in Laos Methanol Tragedy
A second Australian teen has died from suspected methanol poisoning in Laos, pushing the death toll to six. Nineteen-year-old Holly Bowles from Melbourne passed away, confirmed by Australian Foreign Minister Senator Penny Wong.
“All Australians will be heartbroken by the tragic passing of Holly Bowles. I offer my deepest sympathies to her family and friends,”
Holly’s death follows days after her best friend, Bianca Jones, also 19 and from Melbourne, died. Both were poisoned after drinking methanol-tainted drinks in the popular backpacker hotspot of Vang Vieng.
Death Toll Includes Brits, Americans, Danes
The victims aren’t just Australians. Simone White, a 28-year-old lawyer from Orpington, Kent, also died after reportedly consuming free shots at a local bar. Her death was announced last Thursday.
Others include two Danish women in their 20s and a 56-year-old American. All reportedly fell ill after drinking the same tainted booze.
Methanol Poisoning: The Deadly Culprit
Methanol, a toxic and cheap alcohol substitute, is believed to be behind the deaths. Consuming it can lead to severe poisoning or death. Adulterated alcohol is a known hazard in some countries, used by unscrupulous sellers to cut costs.
Government Warnings and Ongoing Probe
Both the UK and Australian governments have warned travellers about the risks of drinking local mixed drinks in Laos.
Laos authorities have launched an investigation after multiple victims consumed free shots at a Vang Vieng bar. The probe is ongoing.
Tributes and Support Flood In
The news of Holly and Bianca’s deaths has devastated friends, families, and the wider Australian community. Holly’s family is expected to issue a statement soon.
Meanwhile, the Australian government promises to support the victims’ families through this tragic time. Further updates will follow as investigations continue.
