Single Malt Welsh Whisky Earns Official UK Protection
Big news for Welsh whisky fans! Food and Farming Secretary Therese Coffey has officially granted Single Malt Welsh Whisky the same protected status as famous Welsh staples like Gower Salt Marsh Lamb and Welsh Leeks. The announcement came today at the Royal Welsh Show, shining a spotlight on this proud homegrown spirit.
First Spirit to Nab New UK Geographical Indication Status
This marks the first time a UK spirit has been registered under the fresh post-Brexit UK Geographical Indication (UKGI) scheme. Single Malt Welsh Whisky now joins iconic British names like Scotch Whisky, Melton Mowbray Pork Pies, and Cornish Clotted Cream in receiving official protection.
The new GI status guarantees consumers that their bottle is the real deal, defending Welsh distillers from copycats and counterfeit versions.
Pure Welsh Craft: From Barley to Bottling
Dating back to 1887, Single Malt Welsh Whisky is crafted using 100% Welsh malted barley and water. Every step—from brewing to bottling—must happen on Welsh soil. The country’s damp, mild climate helps create a smooth, refreshing flavour, while many distilleries proudly use their own wells to tap into Wales’s famed fresh water.
The GI covers four Welsh distilleries whose whiskies are exported to over 45 countries worldwide, including the USA, France, Germany, and China.
Industry Cheers as Word Spreads
“Single Malt Welsh Whisky is widely acclaimed for its lightness of character and I am pleased to announce it will be the first protected spirit under our UKGI scheme at the Royal Welsh Show,” said Therese Coffey. “This move showcases how the UK government backs the best of British food and drink to boost jobs, sales, and our economy.”
Stephen Davies, CEO of Penderyn Whisky, commented: “Achieving UKGI status is a huge milestone—not just for us but for the entire Welsh whisky industry. It safeguards product quality and origin, marking an exciting step for a sector that has steadily grown over the past 20 years.”
Welsh Secretary David TC Davies added: “Wales is earning a growing reputation for quality food and drink. I’m thrilled Welsh whisky now has this special recognition. UKGI status helps distillers promote their unique products worldwide, supports jobs, and drives prosperity.”
With full UK protection now in place, whisky lovers can enjoy Single Malt Welsh Whisky with confidence, knowing it’s proudly and genuinely Welsh—inside and out.
