US Military Takes Out ISIS Leader in Drone Strike Amid Tensions with Russia
Deadly Drone Strike Hits ISIS in Eastern Syria
The United States military has dealt a major blow to ISIS with a successful drone strike in eastern Syria. On Friday, MQ-9 drones targeted and killed Osama al-Muhajer, a senior ISIS leader, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed on Sunday.
US Promises to Crush ISIS Threat
General Michael Kurilla, head of CENTCOM, underlined America’s determination to eradicate ISIS from the region. “We remain committed to the defeat of ISIS throughout the region,” he said, warning the terror group’s threat extends beyond Syria’s borders.
No Civilian Deaths, But Some Injuries Under Review
CENTCOM assured that no civilians were killed during the strike, though reports of a civilian injury are being investigated by coalition forces. Earlier in the day, the drones came under harassment from Russian warplanes, adding fuel to the already fiery US-Russia tensions in the area.
Russia and US Clash Over Drone Operations
The MQ-9 drones survived nearly two hours of close encounters with Russian jets, who dropped parachute flares and flew dangerously near, forcing evasive manoeuvres. This latest incident marks the third time Russian warplanes have aggressively engaged US Reaper drones over Syria.
The US military has publicly urged 1 to stop these reckless provocations. The tension escalated back in March when a US Reaper drone worth $30 million was allegedly downed by Russian jets—a charge Moscow denies despite US footage proving interference.
Russia and Iran Back Assad, But Fighting Remains
Russia, alongside Iran, remains a staunch ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Their support has helped the regime reclaim most lost territories. However, rebel strongholds, especially in Idlib province, still resist Assad’s control.
US Forces Stay to Fight ISIS
Despite ISIS’s official defeat in Syria in 2019, the terror group still operates in remote desert regions and carries out deadly attacks. The US keeps around 1,000 troops on the ground as part of the global fight against ISIS terror.
