Blast Horror in Congo’s North Kivu: Nine Dead, 16 Injured
Tragedy struck North Kivu on Wednesday evening when a hidden explosive device went off in a field, ripping through the area and killing nine people while injuring 16 more. AFP and local sources confirmed the devastating news from the conflict-ridden region.
Civilian’s Fatal Mistake Triggers Deadly Blast
Justin Mwangaza, a respected local civil society leader, revealed the grim cause: a civilian found the bomb and handed it over to a militiaman, unaware of the danger. The device exploded shortly after, causing instant death and serious injuries.
A nurse at a nearby clinic detailed the casualty toll: “Two died immediately, while seven succumbed to their wounds later.” She warned the crisis continues as many wounded remain in critical condition.
Endless Conflict Fuels Chaos in Eastern DRC
North Kivu is no stranger to violence. The eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has suffered decades of conflict, stemming from brutal wars in the 1990s and 2000s. The UN has identified around 120 armed groups operating in the region, keeping the area dangerously unstable.
M23 Rebel Group Fuels Crisis, Faces Accusations
The notorious M23 rebel group reemerged in late 2021 and seized large parts of North Kivu. Their violent campaign displaced over one million people, according to the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
Human Rights Watch slammed M23 in a June 2023 report, accusing the militants of murder, rape, and other brutal war crimes, worsening the region’s humanitarian emergency.
Adding fuel to the fire, UN experts and Western governments — including the US and France — accuse Rwanda of secretly backing the M23 rebels. Kigali denies the claims, but tensions continue to rise.
