The BBC has reportedly “indefinitely” paused production of The Split Up, a spin-off series from the popular legal drama The Split. Initially announced in February, the new series was set to expand the world of the original show, diving into the complexities of a high-end Manchester-based British-Asian divorce firm. However, it has been reported that the show’s production has been delayed, with no clear timeline on when it might resume.
The Split Up was scheduled to begin filming next month in Manchester, but production has now been halted due to “editorial reasons,” according to a BBC insider. While the exact reasons behind the delay remain undisclosed, it is clear that the decision has placed the show’s future in a state of uncertainty.
The series, created by Ursula Rani Sarma, was expected to explore a new family dynamic within the world of Kishan Law, a family-run divorce firm that gets thrown into turmoil after a major secret is revealed. At the time of its announcement, Sarma expressed excitement about continuing the themes of The Split, saying, “I was honoured to be asked to create The Split Up: a spin-off which introduces a whole new family and city while still holding on to the warmth, humour, and heartbreak of Abi Morgan’s original series.
The show was also praised for its potential to address the underrepresentation of British-Asian stories on television, adding a new layer of cultural diversity to the legal drama genre.
Though production of The Split Up has been paused, fans of The Split can still look forward to a two-part special of the original series, set to air later this year. The special will focus on the character Hannah, exploring her love life two years after the events of the last season, set against the backdrop of weddings, break-ups, and reunions.
The BBC and the production company, Sisters, are expected to revisit plans for The Split Up at a later date, but for now, the spin-off remains in limbo as fans await further updates.
