Homeless Man Pleads Guilty After Fatal Alleyway Attack
A vicious assault in Sandwell ended in tragedy when Jagdev Lally died from serious head injuries. The 38-year-old, believed to be homeless, was found bleeding in an alley near Tollgate Shopping Centre around 9am on Tuesday 14 April. He was rushed to hospital with a brain bleed but sadly passed away three weeks later, on Friday 1 May.
Jealous Rage Sparks Brutal Attack
Investigations revealed Mr Lally was attacked around 3am by another homeless man, Ashley Pace. The assault erupted after Mr Lally lay down next to a woman. Her partner, Pace, arrived and, in a jealous rage, punched and kicked Mr Lally after he fell to the floor, leaving him with severe head and facial injuries.
CCTV caught the savage attack just off Smethwick High Street. Pace, 35, was arrested and initially charged with wounding, then murder. A week-long trial was set for 23 November, but this week Pace pleaded guilty to manslaughter at Wolverhampton Crown Court.
Family Speaks Out: ‘Jagdev Was a Loving Father’
“Jagdev was a loving father, son and brother,” the family said.
“He was the sole provider for his parents in India, who are now totally lost without him. They, his son and sisters will never see him again.”
“We need answers as to why someone would carry out this attack. We hope justice is served so the assailant realises the pain he caused Jagdev and his family.”
“To be taken at such a young age is difficult enough, but for it to be under such tragic circumstances is heart-breaking.”
Detective Condemns ‘Vicious, Unprovoked’ Assault
Detective Inspector Jackie Nicholson said: “This was a vicious and unprovoked attack on a vulnerable man by someone unhappy about where he had laid down to sleep.”
“Jagdev collapsed with serious injuries and never regained consciousness. I’d like to thank the member of the public who helped and got him to hospital.”
“Nothing will bring Jagdev back, but seeing the attacker brought to justice may offer some comfort.”
Ashley Pace will be sentenced on Friday 15 January at Wolverhampton Crown Court.
