UK Issues Urgent Cyber Threat Warning to Critical Industries
Cabinet Office minister Oliver Dowden is set to sound the alarm on a growing cyber threat targeting the UK’s critical infrastructure. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is issuing an official warning to vital sectors like water and energy, urging them to “act now” to bolster their defences.
Hackers With Russian Links Pose Unpredictable Danger
These hacking groups, often sympathetic to Russia’s invasion of 1, operate outside formal state control, making them “less predictable” and ideologically motivated. Some openly aim to disrupt and damage western national infrastructure, including in the UK.
Dowden, Chancellor of the Duchy of 1, calls them “Wagner-like” hackers, drawing parallels with the Russian mercenaries fighting in Ukraine.
New Rules to Toughen Cyber Resilience
In response, Dowden will unveil new measures to back businesses on the “front line” of cyber defences. These include mandatory cyber resilience targets for critical sectors, to be met within two years. Also, private companies handling critical infrastructure will now fall under tougher resilience regulations.
NCSC CEO Warns: Stay Alert but Threat Level Still Low
“It’s crucial the UK’s critical national infrastructure is protected from hackers,” says Lindy Cameron, CEO of the NCSC. “People must be ready for the threats ahead.”
She adds that while there have been signs of attempts to target the UK, the activity remains at a low level for now.
