RAC launches free app to help drivers find UK’s cheapest petrol and diesel

Save up to 6p per litre with myRAC Fuel Finder

The RAC has unveiled its brand-new myRAC Fuel Finder app, giving all drivers the power to sniff out the cheapest fuel wherever they are. It’s totally free to download and could save you up to 6p a litre – that’s as much as £3.30 off a full 55-litre tank. No RAC membership needed to use it, though members get handy extras like easy breakdown reporting.

Big savings on petrol and diesel – every time you fill up

  • Diesel can be found 6p per litre cheaper than local averages.
  • Petrol prices can be 5p per litre lower.
  • Weekly diesel drivers could save up to £172 a year.
  • Weekly petrol drivers could save around £143 annually.

Even if you only fill up fortnightly, you could still pocket £86 a year on diesel and £71.50 on petrol. Simple: just download the app and search for the cheapest sites within a two, five, or ten-mile radius. The app shows the top five cheapest stations near you and compares them to the UK fuel averages.

Why you need this app now

Fuel prices soared to record highs last summer following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, topping 191.5p a litre for petrol and nearly 199p for diesel. Filling a family car tank cost over £105 then. Prices have dropped since, now averaging around 143p for petrol and 145p for diesel, bringing a tank to less than £80. But the RAC warns that big supermarket forecourts, which dominate fuel sales, aren’t always passing on these savings, especially for diesel.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said:

“Fuel prices vary wildly between forecourts. Our myRAC app ensures drivers get the best deal possible — saving up to 6p a litre or more, especially on diesel, which has been overpriced despite falling wholesale costs. This free app lets you avoid feeling ripped off and instead be confident you’re filling up at the cheapest stations nearby.”

Williams added:

“The more drivers use the app, the more competition increases, forcing forecourts to cut prices. Unlike Northern Ireland, where competition drives fuel prices down, many UK areas lack sufficient rivalry.”

Extra features to keep your car running smoothly

Alongside fuel prices, the myRAC app helps you stay on top of MOTs, servicing, insurance, and tax reminders. RAC members get extra perks like quick breakdown reporting via the Rescue Me feature.
