Deadly Storm and Tornado Ravage South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa has been slammed by ferocious weather. Torrential rain and a tornado struck north of Durban, leaving four dead and over 150 homeless. Local authorities confirmed the tragic toll on Thursday after relentless flooding and powerful winds caused widespread destruction.

Disaster Strikes Durban and Beyond

Three of the fatalities occurred within Durban, while another was reported elsewhere in the province. One person remains missing amid the chaos. The disaster management department issued a statement expressing deep regret over the loss of life. Thousands have been displaced as homes and infrastructure, including crucial sewage systems, lie in ruins.

Climate Change Intensifies Extreme Weather

Nonala Ndlovu, spokesperson for KwaZulu-Natal’s Department of Cooperative Governance, revealed that public services are severely disrupted. “The damage to infrastructure from this unprecedented storm is extensive,” Ndlovu said.

KwaZulu-Natal usually experiences its rainy season from November to March, making this out-of-season deluge especially alarming. Officials linked the havoc directly to climate change, warning, “We are experiencing firsthand the true effects of climate change during the winter season.”

A Grim Reminder of Previous Catastrophes

This latest disaster echoes the devastating floods of April 2022, which claimed over 400 lives in Durban and nearby areas. Experts have long cautioned that rising global temperatures are driving more frequent and violent storms — a deadly trend now hitting vulnerable regions like KwaZulu-Natal hard.
