Southern Europe Sizzles Under Scorching Heatwave
Southern Europe is roasting as a brutal heatwave sweeps the region. Italy faces blistering highs, with Sicily and Sardinia set to hit a sweltering 48°C. This could topple Italy’s record of 48.8°C, set only two years ago. Shockingly, 60% of Italy is expected to see temperatures soaring above 40°C this week.
Red Alerts and Rising Health Risks Across Italy
The Italian government has slapped a red alert on 20 of its 27 major cities. Officials warn the elderly and vulnerable face serious health risks. Last summer’s Europe-wide heatwave killed 18,000 Italians – the highest death toll across 35 countries in a recent study by the Institute of Global Health.
Hospitals Overwhelmed and Power Cuts Hit Rome
Emergency rooms and hotlines are stretched thin, seeing a 20% rise in cases linked to the heat. Rome’s power grid is buckling under the pressure as air conditioner usage spikes, causing blackouts in parts of the city. Meanwhile, farmers fear the heatwave will wreck livestock health, with milk production down 10%.
“We urge residents to wear lightweight linen and stay indoors from 10am to 6pm,” advises Italy’s Ministry of Health. They also warn against alcohol, fizzy drinks, and coffee.
Rome is pitching in by offering free swimming pools access to those over 70 to help the elderly beat the heat.
Spain and Greece Face Wildfires and Blistering Temps
Andalusia in southern Spain is under “extreme risk,” with temperatures reaching 44°C. Wildfires rage in the Canary Islands, forcing 4,000 people from La Palma and 50 from Tenerife. Over in Greece, huge fires near Athens have sparked mass evacuations. Temperatures could climb to 44°C, prompting a rare closure of the Acropolis to protect tourists.
As Southern Europe endures this relentless heatwave, authorities scramble to protect citizens and minimise damage. Stay safe and stay cool!
