China’s Massive Military Buildup Near Taiwan
Taiwan has blasted China after spotting over 100 Chinese warplanes and nine navy ships buzzing around its self-ruled island. Beijing claims Taiwan as its territory and hasn’t shied away from threatening to seize it by force. This massive show of muscle has sent tensions sky-high across the Taiwan Strait and the wider region.
The Taiwanese Defence Ministry called this surge a “recent high,” warning the sheer scale of Chinese incursions raises serious security alarms. Between September 17 and 18 alone, Taiwan detected 103 Chinese aircraft — including 40 that crossed the Taiwan Strait’s median line and entered its sensitive southwestern and southeastern air defence zones.
Taipei Demands China Halt Provocations
Taiwan has blasted Beijing’s “destructive unilateral actions” and warned they risk sparking wider conflict and regional instability. Naval and air incursions around Taiwanese waters have surged, with China’s military ramping up exercises alongside its aircraft carrier, the Shandong, in the Western Pacific.
Japan’s Defence Ministry backed up Taiwan’s reports, confirming Chinese warships and planes were active near Taiwan and in the surrounding waters. Taiwan’s defence officials also noted these military drills coincided with high-profile visits by US and Canadian ships sailing through the Taiwan Strait — prompting Beijing to put its troops on “high alert.”
Power Play: China Challenges US and Allies in Asia-Pacific
Experts say China’s aggressive posturing aims to push back against US-led military exercises and pressure from Washington and its allies. The moves are both political and military, designed to counter the influence of democratic nations in the region and send a stark warning to Taiwan and its backers.
“These actions suggest a clear effort to intimidate Taiwan and signal Beijing’s resolve to assert control,” analysts said.
