Russian Troops Seize Key Southern Port City of Berdyansk

The southern port city of Berdyansk, home to around 100,000 people and a small naval base, fell under Russian control on Sunday afternoon. Mayor Alexander Svidlo revealed in a Facebook video that Russian forces entered the city centre at 3.50pm and took over city hall by 8pm.

“They informed us all administrative buildings were under their control and that they were taking over the executive committee building,” said Svidlo. “But under armed men’s control, I consider this unacceptable. So we, along with the operational headquarters, left the executive committee building.”

This capture marks a strategic gain for Moscow along Ukraine’s Black Sea coast.
