Six Dead After Torrential Rains Ravage Central Spain

Rescue teams in central Spain uncovered a grim scene on Saturday. The body of a woman was found near the Vallehermoso stream, close to Valmojado in Toledo. This raises the death toll from last weekend’s catastrophic floods to six.

Missing Woman Found After Relentless Search

The woman, believed to be in her 50s, had been missing since violent rainstorms struck the region. Streets turned into surging rivers, washing away roads and bridges. Rescue operations have been ongoing amid the widespread destruction.

A sniffer dog from Spain’s Military Emergencies Unit located the body about 50 metres from the stream, hidden in thick mud and undergrowth. Guardia Civil spokeswoman Antonia Requena said, “It was hidden in undergrowth and mud.” While identification is pending, authorities are confident it’s the missing woman, whose damaged car was found nearby earlier this week.

Flood Devastation Claims Multiple Lives

  • Earlier in the week, three bodies of men were recovered in Toledo province.
  • On Friday, the remains of two men missing near Aldea del Fresno surfaced, following the overflow of the Alberche River.
  • Among the victims was a 47-year-old man whose car was swept away by floodwaters.

His wife and daughter were rescued safely on Sunday, while their 10-year-old son was found alive the next day, clinging to a tree above the floodwaters.

Nationwide Storm Causes Havoc

The ferocious weekend storm tore across Spain, causing severe flooding and forcing 123 towns to close temporarily. The disaster has left communities shaken and emergency services stretched to the limit.
