UK and Japan Join Forces for Space Security

The UK’s top Air Force boss, Air Chief Marshal Sir Mike Wigston, has struck a new space deal with Japan’s Koku-Kietai chief, General Shunji Izutsu. The two signed a key Terms of Reference document during the DSEI Japan defence show in Tokyo this week.

New Space Partnership Takes Off

This deal lays the groundwork for Space Engagement Talks between the UK Space Command and Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force. It promises future teamwork on sharing operational knowledge, joint exercises, training, and personnel swaps. Both sides also plan to share space-related intelligence to boost their mutual security.

UK’s Air Chief Marshal: Japan a ‘Valued Partner’

“Japan is a valued international partner of the UK. We share common values and strategic interests, and we are working ever more closely in the face of global security challenges,” said Air Chief Marshal Sir Mike Wigston.

“The space domain is critical to our shared security and prosperity, and a vital area of cooperation, underpinned by UK Space Command and the Koku-Jietai.”

Wigston, along with Air Vice-Marshal Paul Godfrey, attended DSEI Japan, which drew around 10,000 visitors and 200 exhibitors from at least 15 countries. The event is a prime UK platform for strengthening relationships and showcasing defence priorities like air and missile defence, unmanned tech, maritime, cyber, and space.
