Brighton’s Ukrainian Refugees Face Housing Crisis as Homes for Ukraine Scheme Hits One Year

Survey Reveals Housing Worries for Ukrainian Guests

A fresh survey of Ukrainian refugees in Brighton and Hove has slammed housing as the biggest headache. The poll, crafted with input from the Ukrainian community and translated into their language, aimed to spotlight the real challenges refugees face after arriving in the city.

While most refugees said they felt very welcome in Brighton and Hove, the safety and friendliness of the city, plus strong community support and access to education, were praised. The presence of a supportive host was flagged as the top positive factor in helping them settle.

Language and Jobs: The Struggle Is Real

Besides housing troubles, the survey highlights language barriers, financial strain, employment struggles, healthcare access, and integration as major hurdles for Ukrainian guests. The council will use these insights to shape upcoming support services, including a new Ukrainian Refugee grant launching this month.

Though some Ukrainians have found work here, many remain unemployed or stuck in low-level jobs like hospitality and food production – far below their education levels. Nearly half hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, with 1 in 3 boasting a master’s or more. Yet poor English skills remain a major employment blocker.

Homes for Ukraine Hosts Urged to Stay on as Refugees Face Uncertainty

The Homes for Ukraine scheme recently marked its first anniversary on June 14. But as most refugees near the end of their agreed stays with hosts, anxiety is growing. Over a third say they’ve contacted the council’s Housing Team for help or don’t know where they’ll live next.

Brighton and Hove City Council is calling on hosts to extend stays where possible. They’re also on the lookout for new volunteers to sign up as hosts. To sweeten the deal, hosts currently receive £350 a month, with a £500 payment available for those housing guests over a year. Plus, hosts get ongoing advice and support from the Ukrainian Response team.
