Million-Pound Home Saved After Dramatic Surrey Blaze
A £1 million-plus property was nearly lost to a fierce fire, but heroic efforts by Surrey Fire and Rescue Service stopped the flames in their tracks. Firefighters bravely entered the burning home, evacuated the owners to safety, and battled the inferno from the inside.
Massive Fire Sends 60 Firefighters Racing to Scene
The blaze ignited in the roof of a wooden Scandinavian-style house, rapidly growing into a fully-developed fire. Over 60 firefighters poured in, supported by two water carriers and an aerial ladder platform. The owners praised the crews for preventing the fire from engulfing the entire property.
Although the roof suffered around 40% damage and parts of the second floor were hit, the quick response limited the destruction. Fire crews described thick smoke and flames pouring from the roof upon arrival.
Challenging Conditions Hamper Firefighting Efforts
“The home’s unique build slowed us down. There was no loft space, so teams had to keep cutting away sections to stop the flames spreading,” said one firefighter. Smoke was heavy, and flames were clearly visible when they first got there.
Cause Believed Linked to Wood Burner, Investigation Underway
Firefighters suspect the fire started from a wood burner, but the exact cause remains under investigation. Six firefighters entered the property wearing breathing apparatus, using six hose reels and two ventilation units to fight the fire.
The incident commander revealed added challenges: “The fire spread to the roof space, so we called in an aerial ladder platform. Water supply was tricky due to the house’s remote location.”
Fire Crews Forced to Use Extension Ladders
“The aerial ladder couldn’t fit down the driveway, so we relied on extension and roof ladders to tackle the blaze,” they added.
Thanks to quick thinking and superior teamwork, this million-pound home escaped complete ruin.
