Teen Jailed for Brutal South London Stabbing That Left Victim Brain-Damaged for Life
An 18-year-old has been locked up for 10 years after a savage Clapham stabbing left a 17-year-old victim in a permanent vegetative state. Tyrese Osei-Kofi, from Lordship Lane, SE22, was sentenced at the Old Bailey on Friday, 4 May, for grievous bodily harm with intent following the horrific attack on Jamel Boyce on 14 October 2016.
Teen Stabbed in Heart, Left Fighting for Life
Jamel was found slumped outside a supermarket car park, stabbed in the chest and leg. The chest wound pierced his heart and punctured a lung, causing cardiac arrest. Emergency medics performed roadside surgery, restarting Jamel’s heart before rushing him to hospital. But crucially, he was deprived of oxygen for 14 minutes, suffering an 80% brain function loss.
Doctors revealed Jamel, a business student at St Francis Xavier College, is now in a ‘minimally conscious’ state. He remains in a specialist care facility with little hope of meaningful recovery.
Shocking CCTV and Witness Reports Reveal Attack
CCTV showed Jamel earlier that day at McDonald’s with friends, including Osei-Kofi. Hours later, shoppers spotted a brutal scene outside the supermarket. Witnesses described Osei-Kofi pinning Jamel against a wall with a pack of youths watching like “a pack of animals surrounding a buffalo.” Osei-Kofi screamed for a ‘chiv’ (knife), trapped Jamel’s neck against railings, then stabbed him before fleeing.
Police Praise Witnesses and Medical Heroes
Osei-Kofi first handed himself in on 20 October after media appeals, then was re-arrested in December and charged in April 2017. Detective Constable Sarah Mustoe of Lambeth CID said:
“Jamel’s future was cruelly torn from him over what seemed like a minor disagreement. He could easily have died without the trauma team’s quick action. Now, he remains paralysed, blind, and unable to communicate. His family’s grief is immeasurable.”
She added that Jamel was a shy, polite young man with no gang links, and urged more awareness of knife crime’s devastating consequences.
Victim’s Family Thanks Medics and Supporters
Jamel’s mother, Pansy Boyce, offered heartfelt thanks to the London Air Ambulance Service, hospital staff, and officers who gave first aid at the scene. She said:
“The care Jamel received was nothing short of amazing. Without their courage and skill, my son wouldn’t be alive today. The support from the police and investigation team has been a lifeline during the darkest days.”
