Fire crews called to smoking substation in Cowes

Fire crews from the Isle of Wight Fire rescue service have been called to a smoking transformer on York Street this morning. An alert member of the public called the fire service and than attempted to contact the electricity service. There was a lot of smoke billowing from over the gate. The road was closed just after 11.20am after closed the road at 11.20am. It is understood that the internal oil within the transformer had caught alight but has since burnt out. There is no further risk of fire. A spokesman for the fire and rescue service said two fire appliances from Newport were sent to the incident on York Street. Firefighters are investigating the incident and have called on the Power company. UPDATE: 1215 Fire Crews have removed the cordon and road closure have pasted the incident on to the power company to resolve.
