Spitting fiend assaults police, then lies about having coronavirus
Karan Singh, 23, from Croydon, has been locked up after hurling spit at police custody officers and falsely claiming he had Covid-19 – all because he was “angry” about waiting.
Singh admitted three counts of assault on emergency workers, abusive behaviour, and drug possession at Croydon Crown Court on April 24. The court handed down a total eight-month sentence, including a breach of a suspended sentence.
High-speed drama ends with cannabis and violent outburst
On March 14, officers spotted Singh sitting in a car on Lower Addiscombe Road. They recognised him as disqualified from driving. Singh lied about regaining his licence and reeked of cannabis.
- He admitted smoking weed.
- He tried to flee as cops started searching the vehicle, but the car stalled.
- Officers found multiple bags of cannabis – one in the footwell, nine more in the car.
Singh was arrested on drug possession charges. At the police station, his behaviour turned nasty.
Custody chaos: Spitting attack and fake Covid claim
Singh became aggressive, refused to return to his cell, and had to be physically restrained by multiple officers. As he was shoved into the cell, Singh spat directly in the face of the custody sergeant. Some spit also landed on two other officers.
While blocking the cell door, Singh blurted out he had coronavirus – a lie. He was promptly re-arrested for assaulting emergency workers.
During a safety interview behind the cell door, Singh confessed he spat because he was “stressed out” from waiting, and admitted to faking the Covid claim out of anger. Before the court, he offered a flimsy apology: “Sorry to the officers.”
The custody sergeant needed hospital checks and vaccinations afterward, though no Covid was involved.
Police warn: Spitting and fake Covid claims won’t be tolerated
Superintendent Dan Knowles blasted Singh’s vile behaviour, saying spitting at emergency workers is “never acceptable” – especially lying about Covid in times like these.
“This caused distress to officers simply doing their jobs to keep London safe. Anyone thinking this is okay will be arrested and likely jailed,” he added.
This was the first Covid-related assault case at Croydon Crown Court. Judge Robinson made it clear tough sentences are incoming for such offences.
