Police Federation Chief Reacts to New Six-Person Social Gathering Ban
John Apter, National Chair of the Police Federation of England and Wales, has weighed in after the Government announced a ban on social gatherings of more than six people in England starting Monday.
Police Brace for Increased Pressure Amid Rising COVID Cases
Apter said, “With the rise in confirmed COVID cases, this Government move comes as no surprise. However, these constant legal changes are wearing on the police force.”
He added, “The pressure on policing has ramped up significantly in recent months. This new restriction will only add to the strain. My colleagues will back the public through what’s shaping up to be a very tough time.”
“They will also make it clear that breaking these rules is breaking the law,” Apter stressed.
Government Must Step Up Public Info Campaign, Says Police Chair
Apter urged, “The Government must do its part. With so many rule changes, an effective public information campaign is vital. There’s been a lot of confusion—many people don’t know the exact laws.”
He concluded with a call to action: “We urge the public to follow the new rules, protect each other, and help stop the virus from spreading.”
New Rules: What You Need to Know
- Number of people allowed to meet drops from 30 to six.
- Ban applies nationwide, indoors and outdoors, and to all ages.
- Groups larger than six risk police dispersal or fines for breaking the law.
