North-East Slapped with New COVID Restrictions to Tackle Soaring Cases
Parts of the North East are facing fresh lockdown rules from this Friday to halt rising infection rates. Local leaders and health officials have agreed swift action to stop the virus spreading further.
Which Areas Are Hit?
- Northumberland
- North Tyneside
- Newcastle-upon-Tyne
- Gateshead
- South Tyneside
- Sunderland
- County Durham
What Are the New Rules?
- No socialising with people outside your household or support bubble in private homes or gardens.
- Hospitality venues must switch to table service for food and drink only.
- Leisure and entertainment spots must shut between 10pm and 5am.
Extra Advice for Residents
- Don’t socialise with others outside your household in public places.
- Use public transport only for essential travel like work or school.
- Take holidays solely within your household or support bubble.
- Avoid attending amateur or semi-pro sports events as spectators.
The North East now has the second-highest COVID case numbers in England, trailing only the North West. This move follows close talks with local officials desperate for help.
Matt Hancock, Health Secretary, said:
“After seeing cases in the North East rise to a concerning level, local authorities requested support for tighter restrictions and we have taken swift action to accept their recommendations.”
“We do not take these decisions lightly but I know the people of the North East will work together and break the chains of transmission.”
“I urge those from affected areas: please, get a test if you are symptomatic, stay at home if you need to self-isolate, and think: hands, face, space.”
“This is the only way for us to return to normal life and avoid further restrictions.”
These new rules come on top of the national six-person limit on social gatherings introduced earlier this week. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and may adjust measures if needed.
