£12m Boost to Clear Traffic Jam on Surrey’s A320
Surrey County Council and Runnymede Borough Council have bagged a hefty cash injection from Homes England’s Housing Infrastructure Fund. The £12 million boost will upgrade the jam-packed A320, unlocking new housing sites and easing traffic chaos on one of Surrey’s busiest roads.
New Homes and Smoother Journeys
The funding secures extra road capacity and upgrades every junction along the route to improve traffic flow. Footpaths and cycle lanes get a welcome makeover, with wider paths and new crossing points for walkers and cyclists.
This major overhaul could pave the way for around 3,000 new homes across ten sites in Runnymede, a cornerstone of the council’s recently approved Local Plan. The crown jewel, Longcross Garden Village, is set to deliver at least 1,700 of those new digs.
Local Leaders Back the Move
“The A320 is an important stretch of road, and vital to keep people moving in this part of the county,” said Matt Furniss, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport. “These improvements will support housebuilding and the local economy while encouraging more people to walk and cycle.”
Councillor Nick Prescot, Leader of Runnymede Borough Council, added: “Anyone driving here knows how busy this stretch is. This upgrade not only eases traffic but unlocks new homes, giving locals more choice where to live.”
“The A320 connects key spots like St Peter’s Hospital, two secondary schools, Chertsey town centre, the train station, and the M25. Improving it will boost the economy across the area.”
“This vital work is a prime example of councils working hand-in-hand, backed by Homes England, to support local people.”
Homes England Chips In
Sophie White, Director of Infrastructure Grant at Homes England, said: “We’re committed to backing ambitious councils tackling housing needs through crucial infrastructure. Our multimillion-pound funding will help Runnymede upgrade their road network and deliver new homes for their community.”
