Dewsbury Man Jailed for Life After Brutal Murder of Housemate Stephen Freeman

Dewsbury Man Sentenced for Brutal Murder of Housemate

A Dewsbury man has been locked up for life after savagely attacking and killing the man he was living with. Craig Midgely, 40, was found guilty today at Leeds Crown Court for the December murder of 54-year-old Stephen Freeman.

18 Years for Sustained, Violent Assault

Midgely received an 18-year prison sentence, reduced by 354 days already served behind bars. The horrific attack happened on December 5, 2019, at a home on Moorside End.

Paramedics discovered Freeman with severe injuries and he was pronounced dead at the scene. A post mortem revealed multiple head and body injuries, confirming a sustained and violent assault.

Attack Sparked by Accusation of Theft

The court heard Midgely launched the vicious attack after accusing Freeman of stealing property. Police arrested Midgely at the scene.

Police Praise Justice Served

“Stephen Freeman was a frail and vulnerable man who lost his life as a result of a truly brutal and sustained assault by Midgely who he thought of as a friend,” said Senior Investigating Officer DCI Emma Winfield.

“I am pleased we have been able to secure justice for Stephen and for his friends and acquaintances and hope they will find some closure from seeing Midgely found guilty and sentenced today.”

“The level of the injuries he inflicted on this poor man speak volumes regarding his character and our streets are undoubtedly safer with Midgely behind bars for many years to come.”
